Library News for the week of October 15, 2012

Epping’s public Library has a new phone number! To reach the main desk dial 734-4587. To contact the children’s room directly, use 679-5944.

Now that folks have settled into fall routines there might be some time for a few extra activities. Every Thursday at 1:00 the Scrabble Club meets upstairs and welcomes anyone who is enthusiastic about words to join the game. On the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays each month at 7 pm Epping’s Knit Night encourages knitters to get some progress made on those knitting projects that never seem to get enough attention at home. The library’s book groups meet once a month and are open to new participants. The Dusty Old Mystery Club will be discussing Johnny Underground by Patricia Moyes on Wednesday, October 17th , and then Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier on November 21st. The Eclectic Book Group will discuss The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters on November 14th. Both groups meet at 7 pm on their appointed Wednesdays.

Miss Tracie’s Costume Closet has opened for the season. The library has assembled quite an impressive collection of gently used costumes for library patrons to borrow for Halloween. Most of the costumes fall in the toddler and preschool size range, but there are also many infant costumes and the collection for ‘big kids’ grows with each donation. Residents with library accounts in good standing may borrow costumes until the “Halloween season’ ends. Donations of costumes in good condition will be accepted throughout the month of October.

Later in October there will be owls at the library! On Thursday, October 25th “Who’s Watching You? Owls of the World” invites bird lovers ages 5 and up to learn more about these amazing birds. Two talented naturalists from “Eyes on Owls” in Dunstable, MA will bring six live owls who will help teach how to identify, attract and protect owls in New England and around the world. This program begins at 7:00 pm in the children’s room downstairs and is made possible by a grant from the Friends of the Harvey-Mitchell Memorial Library.

On Friday, October 26th the 9th annual Halloween Party for ages 2-8 and their families will run from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. Kids and their parents are encouraged to wear costumes (no masks, please) for traditional Halloween games, crafts and a ‘spooky’ scavenger hunt designed for the under 10 set. Sign up in the children’s room to provide a snack for the Finger Food Buffet for snacks varied enough to be dinner on this evening of Halloween fun.

Epping’s public library is open Monday – Friday from 10 am to 8 pm and Saturday 10 to 2. For more information call 734-4587, or
