Joan Perkins was recently honored as a recipient of the Bellwether Community Champion award, presented to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to their community and in this case a lifesaving one. On June 22nd, Perkins threw out the ceremonial first pitch at a New Hampshire Fisher Cats game and was celebrated during an on field pregame presentation.
On September 25, 2011, Perkins risked her life to save two families participating in a hayride at Applecrest Farm Orchards. When the horses panicked and started to run erratically through the orchards, Perkins approached the horses to slow them down. The wagon ran over Perkins but stopped thanks to her quick actions. The riders escaped unharmed while Perkins suffered severe injuries from the incident. Perkins is continuing to receive treatment to this day.
Perkins is a resident of Epping.
