Helping children with special needs learn, grow and thrive
The Rhythm Tree and Exeter Hospital are helping children with special needs through music therapy. Through collaboration between the Exeter-based music therapy practice and Exeter Hospital’s Pediatric Rehabilitation Program, children with special needs are benefiting from music therapy. The program is made possible by funding provided by the Exeter Hospital and is being held at Epping Regional Health Center in Epping, NH. The group, which is geared towards children ages 4 to 5, starts on September 13 and will be held on Fridays from 9:30 am to 10:30 am. “I see children with special needs struggle every day to do what most people take for granted. I believe that children with special needs deserve to learn and develop in a fun, creative and motivating atmosphere,” said Ryan Judd, MA, MT-BC, a board certified music therapist that has specialized in working with children with special needs for more than 13 years. “My mission is to help children with special needs learn, grow and thrive!”
Saundra Shaeffer explains the impact of music therapy on her 6-year old son with autism. “Ryan Judd was able to motivate our son, Stephen, to do certain things with ease that he had been laboring on in Speech, OT and ABA therapies. I tried Music Therapy because I thought it would be fun for our son, but then I quickly found it to be the most effective therapy we’ve tried. Our son met his goals quickly, and then generalized the skill so well to other settings. Ryan addressed challenges from social, to academic, to gross motor with quick success. In our son’s case, he has so many abilities that go untapped because of uncooperative tendencies. Other therapists would shake their head in amazement as they observed Ryan’s work with Stephen and saw him jump to whatever Ryan required of him. It raised the bar for all of us to realize what Stephen could do. I hope other parents don’t wait as long as I did to implement this wonderful resource!”
