New England Dragway hosts pivotal stop on Nitro Jam tour September 11-12

Huge show on tap for debut of new Nitro Jam format at NED

EPPING, N.H. (August 31, 2010) – Race fans get ready because the all new Nitro Jam is coming to New England Dragway for the North American Nitro Jam September 11-12 in Epping, N.H.

And this year the event will play its biggest role yet.

As the next-to-last event on the 2010 schedule, drivers will be throwing caution to the wind as they claw and scratch for every bit of real estate they can get in an attempt to get ahead and stay ahead before the season finale at Virginia Motorsports Park in October.

The 8,000 horsepower machines known as Top Fuel return to New England Dragway September 11-12

Competition will be as fierce as ever for the professional cars, while the sportsman drivers gear up for one of the last chances of the season to qualify for the 2010 Tournament of Champions. Nowhere will you find more competitive racing than Epping’s New England Dragway September 11-12.

In addition to being a pivotal stop on the 2010 Nitro Jam schedule, the New England Nitro Jam will also feature the northeast’s first look at the brand new format and classes as a lineup chalked full of nitro-burning dragsters and funny cars awaits fans at the legendary New Hampshire track.

Chalked full of new classes, new rules and an exciting new format, the brand new Nitro Jam will be unlike anything fans have ever seen before. From the rush of 300 mile-per-hour Top Fuel Dragsters, to the 100 percent nitro powered Pro Fuel Dragster class and the new fan favorite Prostalgia Nitro Funny Cars, the new Nitro Jam promises to give fans the nitro rush they have been waiting for.

Also on tap for this unique event is the New England debut of side-by-side jet trucks as the Shockwave jet semi battles the Super Shockwave ’57 Chevy in a showdown between 60,000 horsepower machines.

Nitro Funny Cars return to New England in the all-new Prostalgia Nitro Funny Car class

And that’s not all. The two-day event will also feature wheelstanders, the Harland Sharp Elite 8 Top Sportsman and Top Dragster showdown, high speed sled racing, two days of sportsman racing, FanFest, an incredible fireworks display and much more.

During FanFest fans will have an hour or more to explore the pits and see everything Nitro Jam has to offer.

Along with meeting the drivers and crews, several stations will be set up in the pit area for fans to interact with the event. Included in the list of fan activities is a chance to sign fan-favorite Bobby Lagana’s Top Fuel dragster moments before he makes a 300+ mph pass, a coloring contest where fans can design their own Top Fuel dragster with the winning picture being used as an actual wrap on a dragster later in the season, a reaction time tournament with an actual IHRA tree and a chance to be the race director for a day as fans are selected to draw the first-round pairings of the professional rounds.

FanFest will come to a close with Nitro Thunder as nearly two dozen nitro vehicles warm up at the same time, creating an experience unlike any other. And if it’s more pyrotechnic entertainment you’re seeking, each day’s action is capped by an awesome fireworks display.

For the first time in New Hampshire history the Shockwave jet semi will take on the Super Shockwave ’57 Chevy

And FanFest is only a small portion of what is new for 2010.

Along with new show elements, the new Nitro Jam will also feature a brand new format that puts an emphasis on entertainment and excitement to go along with the side-by-side nitro racing. Instead of two days of qualifying, fans will now see two full days of racing with a winner each night.

Racing will kick-off at 7 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday with immediate racing and eliminations. Each class will run twice each day with the quickest winners from round one meeting up for the championship later in the show.

After one round of nitro racing, fans will see each of show elements including the jet trucks, wheelstanders and additional entertainment pieces followed by a brief intermission. After a quick cleanup racing will continue with all the cars returning to the track and a winner being named in each class. The show will come to a close with a huge fireworks display and the most amazing spectacle in racing as the Shockwave jet semi goes head-to-head against the Super Shockwave jet truck.

The new Nitro Jam is all about entertainment mixed with competitive racing

More than anything the new format allows fans to enjoy an evening or afternoon of racing without much “downtime” in between. From the beginning of the show to the end fans will see everything Nitro Jam has to offer and more.

While the professional show will provide a completely new look and feel, sportsman racing will remain exactly the same with qualifying on Saturday and eliminations on Sunday. It will also be one of the final opportunities for sportsman racers to qualify for the year-end Tournament of Champions in Virginia.

In the professional categories the championship battles are some of the most intense ever seen before in Nitro Jam competition.

Coming into New Hampshire Bobby Lagana and Bruce Litton are currently the men on top of the Top Fuel field, bringing with them nearly 20 wins combined and an incredible lead over the rest of the field. Lagana has been the biggest surprise so far this season with a championship caliber year for the lowest budgeted team on the tour.

Behind Litton and Lagana is ’08 Top Fuel World Champion and ’09 NHRA Rookie of the Year Spencer Massey and Del Cox Jr. The two teammates aren’t in the championship picture, but both are still very hungry for a win at the New England track.

The northeast’s best sportsman racers prepare for one last shot at the Tournament of Champions

Not to be outdone the 100-percent nitro-powered Pro Fuel class has been just as exciting as their much larger cousins with low five-second runs at over 270 miles-per-hour. Minnesota based racer Jeff Hamelink currently leads the class with one win through the first eight races this season.

Bill Evans, driver of the “Black Pearl” Pro Fuel machine, is also in the hunt along with Michael Manners in the “Shreddar” Pro Fuel Dragster and Robin Samsel in the “A-Fuelish Pleasure” Machine.

By far the most exciting new addition to the Nitro Jam formula is the incredibly popular Prostalgia Nitro Funny Car class. Featuring halftrack burnouts and on-the-edge racing, the new class has been a hit with fans as some of the best nostalgia cars in the country have joined the tour.

Leading the new class is Steve Nichols, driver of the “Mill Road Boys” ’70 Camaro, who has amassed a narrow lead over friend and rival Peter Gallen, driver of the “Poverty Stricken” Vega. Gallen leads the class in wins.

Greg Jacobsmeyer, driving the “All-Star Dodge” Challenger, is third, followed by Mike “McAttack” McIntire and John Dunn.

Don’t miss New England’s biggest race as Nitro Jam invades New England Dragway September 11-12 for the North American Nitro Jam.

Tickets are only $25 if purchased in advance and, as always, parking and admission to the FanFest pit party is free. The North American Nitro Jam will also feature a special military night on Saturday, September 11 to honor those who help serve this great nation.

For the Epping girls basketball team it was a very good choice Tuesday night.

The 5-foot-11 senior from Epping, who resides in Fremont — she believes she’s the only student left who does — scored seven points and was tough as nails defensively for the Blue Devils in their 47-35 victory over Newmarket.

Taylor Fiore led Epping (5-9 in Class M) with 19 points, while Christa Weaver added 12. Sam Arsenault (four), Sarah Nadeau (three), and Danielle Bennett (two) all scored for Epping.

Bertsch finally gets his win

When Bob Bertsch crossed the finish line ahead of Michael Bruno in the Pro Stock final at last weekend’s Amalie Oil North American Nationals at New England Dragway, it was a moment the 64-year-old from Willis, Mich. will never forget.

It wasn’t Bertsch’s first final – it wasn’t even his first win – but there was definitely something sweeter about this win than any of the others and that, Bertsch says, is why he continues to spend his retirement in the cockpit of a racecar.

“This one means a lot to me,” Bertsch said moments after climbing from the Rislone Ford Mustang. “This is my first real win and maybe now I can start collecting a few more.”

In reality Bertsch’s first career victory came in 2008 at Castrol Raceway in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, but unforeseen circumstances placed Bertsch as the only car in the field that weekend.

With no competition, Bertsch took home his first career Ironman and immediately dedicated the win in honor of his crew chief who passed away the month prior. With the trophy prominently displayed underneath of a picture of his friend and mentor, Bertsch immediately went back to work trying to pick up his second win and prove that he was not a one-hit-wonder.

He finished 2008 with little luck and then struggled even more to start 2009 with five first round losses in six races, but at last weekend’s event in New Hampshire the stars aligned and Bertsch was able to eliminate some of the best in the business on his way to picking up the win he has been waiting for his entire career.

“The one in Edmonton was for John (Weisler) and there is no question about that,” Bertsch said. “This one I was able to earn and for that I will always cherish this as my first Ironman.”

Bertsch’s victory last Sunday was the culmination of a racing career that began in 1969.

Growing up in Iowa with no drag strips for miles, Bertsch eventually moved to Michigan and was immediately introduced to the sport when a few of his coworkers took him to a race in 1968.

One year later Bertsch had his own car and was off to the races.

“I have always been a gear head and I started working in a garage and that is how I earned my way through college,” Bertsch said. “I have always been on the mechanical side, always been doing stuff like that. I got my degree in mechanical engineering and started working for Ford Motor Company and spent 33 years in all different areas of manufacturing.”

During that same span Bertsch worked alongside a close friend of his who raced circle tracks and motorcycles. Bertsch also spent some time on the NASCAR circuit as a member of a pit crew all while trying to get his racing career up and running.

“I have always raced, but I have never been able to commit to something because when you are in a big company you don’t know when or if you are going to be free or not,” Bertsch said.

Bertsch dabbled in different forms of racing, but his demanding job kept him busy year-round. During his career with Ford Bertsch lived all over the world, including stints in Mexico and China, before finally retiring in 2001.

Since then Bertsch has begun a consulting business to help pay for his racing habit, but he will be quick to admit that when it comes to work and racing – racing always wins.

“I have been doing consulting since I retired, but I have geared my consulting around racing. After all, racing comes first and consulting comes second,” Bertsch said with a smile.

After getting his start in the Top Sportsman ranks, Bertsch met a man by the name of Pete Berner who convinced him to move over to Pro Stock where he still races today.

Berner, a two-time IHRA Pro Stock World Champion, helped Bertsch get on his feet by providing a car and a few motors in the Spring of 2005, but it didn’t take long for Bertsch to realize that the transition wasn’t as easy as he expected.

“I bought a car and motor in 2005 that had qualified for every event the year before and in my first year I qualified at one event,” Bertsch said. “It was a sobering experience because technology and what everyone was doing was so different. I was used to building cars that ran in the high 10s, but this is a different animal when you are running the kinds of speeds we are.

“So the next year I went to work building my very first new car.”

Since then Bertsch has had a mixed bag of success, but his win last weekend in New Hampshire saw all of his hard work finally pay off.

So what keeps a man who will turn 65 next month barreling down the track at 220 miles-per-hour?

“The people I race with are what keep me doing this. All of the guys are always helping me or always coming over and talking with me. They are a fine group of people,” Bertsch said. “Rick Jones built me a fine car and Jon Kaase has done a good job of providing horsepower. Combine that with this great group of people I compete against and it makes for the perfect place to race.”

And with the win showing just what this team is capable of, don’t expect to see Bertsch call it quits anytime soon.

“I am not a youngster anymore, but I certainly don’t feel 65,” Bertsch said. “I have a family that is very supportive and I know it is hard on my wife when I take off, but we are working on some ways so I can get some help for her while I am gone because you can’t just let the family life go either.

“Life is just like racing, you have your good days and you have your bad days, but I have a very supportive family, a phenomenal sponsor and a great group of friends at the IHRA who have been very supportive of me over the years.

“I always try to maintain a sense of perspective and to be honest I feel like a pretty lucky guy to be able to do what I do.”

It looks like that retirement home in Arizona is going to have to wait a little longer on Bertsch.

The event, presented by Wolverine Boots and featuring the New England Dodge Dealers Night of Fire, will provide the backdrop for the stretch run that will determine the 2009 champions of Top Fuel, Pro Modified and Elite Motorsports Pro Stock.

It’s now or never for those with championship aspirations, and heading into New Hampshire the points battles in all three IHRA professional classes are extremely close.

In Top Fuel, 2007 class champion Bruce Litton has seen his lead over rookie Del Cox Jr., shrink from 84 to 15 points in the span of two races, and the stage is now set for a knock-down, drag-out brawl for the crown. This is sure to be one of the toughest battles for Top Fuel supremacy in recent memory.

The Pro Mod chase is just as exciting, as class veteran Ed Hoover and defending champion Kenny Lang have traded the top spot on the points list all season long. A victory at the previous race at Martin, Michigan, coupled with Hoover’s early exit, has given Lang a 56-point lead with three races to go.

Not to be outdone, fans of the sport’s quickest and fastest factory hot rods also have something to cheer about. In Elite Motorsports Pro Stock, Frank Gugliotta has a 46-point edge over rival John Montecalvo. With Montecalvo, and others, so close behind, however, Gugliotta’s lead could quickly disappear, so fans are gearing up for a fight to the finish.

There’s lots of excitement on the sportsman front as well, as there are still numerous chances left to qualify for the “Tournament of Champions,” the new world championship system for sportsman racers.

This season, Nitro Jam national events, as well as select other events, were considered individual tournaments, with the winner of each tournament getting a spot in a field of competitors who will race each other for the world championship at the end of the year. This race, which will take place during the World Finals at Rockingham in October, will crown national champions as well as the national top 10 in each class.

The weekend’s on-track action will be bolstered by the addition of teams representing the Northeast Outlaw Pro Mod Association.

“We are grateful to Aaron Polburn and Skooter Peaco of the IHRA and Feld Motor Sports for recognizing our efforts and inviting us to this event,” said organization president John Mazzorana. ”New England Dragway is an excellent track, and we have many members who love racing there.”

NEOPMA competitors will divert from their normal format of two classes -Nitrous/Aspirated and Blower/Turbo – and run one all-inclusive class. All racing will be done on the quarter-mile.

Qualifying and eliminations for NEOPMA will take place Saturday and Sunday in conjunction with the IHRA professional categories, including a round during the popular “Night of Fire” session Saturday evening.

Also racing alongside the IHRA’s regular and sportsman competitors will be the National Speed Association. The NSA is a heads up, Pro Stock asphalt-snowmobile drag racing circuit. These two-stroke sleds make over 260 horsepower and can rip down the quarter-mile in eight seconds at speeds of over 150 miles per hour.

As with the NEOPMA, the NSA riders will compete in conjunction with the professional rounds.

Prior to all of that, however, homage will be paid to some very special Americans. The first day of this event is September 11th, a date that struck the lives of every citizen in the United States and will always be remembered with sorrow.

In an effort to honor those who gave everything on that tragic day in 2001, the teams at the International Hot Rod Association and New England Dragway will take the opportunity to thank the men and women who continue to unselfishly give of themselves day-in and day-out by celebrating “Freedom Friday.”

Members of any military, police, fire, medical, and rescue unit will receive free entry during Friday’s opening day of competition, with a special ceremony honoring those brave Americans taking place prior to the 7 p.m. start of professional qualifying.

Capping Saturday’s professional qualifying and New England Dodge Dealers Night of Fire festivities will be an appearance by the one and only “King of Quake,” Mr. Bob Motz himself, who will rock the East Coast with the kind of explosive sensory overload only his world-famous jet-powered 20,000 horsepower W999B Kenworth can create.

While most drivers already have their finger placed squarely on the panic button, or at least darn close to it, that isn’t really the case for Pete Berner.

In fact, Berner actually prefers to be in the position of the hunter instead of the hunted, especially this late in the season.

After all, this is all very familiar territory for the two-time IHRA World Pro Stock Champion.

“The last two championships I won were by narrow margins and when I came in second the year before last it was also by a matter of just a few points,” Berner noted. “They know as well as I do that I am going to put as much pressure on them as possible. If they are going to win the championship they are going to have to earn it.

“I don’t give up until the very end.”

So whatever you do, don’t ever count Berner out.

Despite currently sitting in one of the worst slumps of his career, a stretch that includes two consecutive first round losses that has dropped him from second to fourth in points, Berner is as confident as ever that he can get things turned around and make a serious run at a third championship with three races remaining.

“The last couple of races we have been in a slump. I haven’t been driving as well as I had and the motor has been hurt. We didn’t realize it at the time because the car was competitive, but starting back in Grand Bend the motor was hurting,” Berner said. “Once we get the motor program back up to speed, which we have already started to do, we should be fine. We just need to be better prepared and focused on doing a good job driving.

“We seem to do better as pressure gets on us so we are really looking forward to the last three races.”

And what better place to get things turned around than at New England Dragway.

Berner is the defending winner of the Amalie Oil North American Nationals and right now he could use a bit of help getting things turned around.

“We went out and did some testing and we are going to test again before we go to Epping. We will definitely have our game face on when we go there,” Berner said. “We aren’t going to give up easily. Frank is doing a really good job and they have just been more consistent than us as a team.

“When you have great competition like that it just makes you rise to the occasion. Hopefully we will have our act together when we get to the next race.”

Berner’s slump began in mid-July during the Canadian Nationals in Grand Bend and has resulted in back-to-back first round losses for the first time in a very long time for Berner and his team.

Coming off of a win in Tulsa the month prior, Berner went into Canada sitting second in points, just three markers shy of leader Frank Gugliotta. His weekend was nearly flawless through the first two days of competition as Berner put the familiar blue and gold Quarter-Max machine second on the charts entering eliminations.

On Sunday, however, things quickly took a turn for the worse.

Despite putting up the best numbers of the weekend during his first round pass against Dean Goforth, it was not enough to hold off the 65-year-old as Goforth nipped Berner by less than an inch at the line.

While the run was superb, the result was not as great and that is when Berner began to notice something was a little off with the engine.

“Even though we were low E.T. for eliminations, the motor was hurt. We didn’t realize it because we were running so well and then going into Martin it developed more of a problem,” Berner said.

His troubles continued at the Northern Nationals in Michigan as the engine issues continued to worsen. Berner qualified sixth – his lowest qualifying spot of the year – and he once again found himself on the sideline after just one pass on Sunday, this time falling at the hands of John Montecalvo.

“We just didn’t have the power that we had before therefore we weren’t making good choices and not making good runs,” Berner said.

From sitting just three points back of the leader in June to plummeting to fourth some 99 points back in July, it has been quite a ride for the defending champ.

But what doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger and Berner is using that old saying to focus on getting a new and – if you can believe it – better motor prepared for the final three races.

“The day after Martin we debuted a new motor which is much better than the one we had been racing with,” Berner said. “We now have three good bullets and we are finally back up to speed. This motor is going to be much better than our last race motor we had run.”

Now it is off to Epping, New Hampshire and the very familiar New England Dragway for Berner and his crew as they try to correct a month full of problems and turn the corner.

“I think we will have some pretty good bullets going into that race. If I leave on time and drive the way I know I can drive I think we will do well,” Berner said. “It is very possible to get this turned around, I have won three races in a row in the past. We all have these slumps and we plan on coming out of ours.”

Even scarier for the competition is that Berner, who has his own in-house engine program, has even more tricks up his sleeve.

“We have two great guys, Jerry Janota and Mike Slaviero that work endlessly on these motors everyday. They are always looking to find us more power and we have one that we are assembling right now that will be our fourth motor and I think it is going to be better than this one,” Berner said. “We are constantly evolving and trying new things and working with some great manufacturers. It shows great dedication from our engine shop as to what our potential is.”

While everything is finally going smoothly under the hood, now Berner shifts his focus to the cool New England weather as his next challenge.

“We have made some really great runs there, but it will be a crapshoot. Being later in the year it could be a little cooler and it will be really fast, but we are typically at our best when the track is slick like Tulsa,” Berner said. “We have won three years in a row in Tulsa and that is because we really know how to get down those types of tracks.”

But concerning himself with things out of his control has never really been Berner’s style.

In fact, in the midst of the most competitive season of Pro Stock racing in a long time, Berner is quite pleased with the position he is in and can’t wait to hit the track again later this month.

“This is the way I prefer to race. It is a lot more fun when you have this kind of competition. All of these guys, whoever wins the championship, they know they have to earn it,” Berner said. “When you have pressure to do well that is when this team rises to the occasion and we are ready to do just that.”

July 11th

Coastal Truck and Autobody Night of Thrills presented by the New England Dodge Dealers to feature several nitro powered classes

EPPING, NH – New England Dragway will welcome fuel altered pilot Lisa Coil, wife of John Force’s crew chief Austin Coil for the first time on July 11th at the Coastal Truck and Autobody Night of Thrills presented by the New England Dodge Dealers. Coil will be squaring off against the nostalgia nitro funny car of Justin Grant in a crowd pleasing match race.

“Lisa’s been driving Tom Motry’s Drastic Plastic 1948 Anglia AA/Fuel Altered for a while now and she’s recognized as one of the best altered drivers in the country,” track manager Joe Lombardo said. “This is no wimpy car either. It’s a full boogie machine and has gone deep into the 5.70’s before. Justin better have the Funny Car tuned up because it’s going to be a tough match.”

Aside from the nostalgic feeling machinery, there will be modern Nitro Harleys, and the Lagana brothers, Dom and Bobby will be racing each other in 300mph Top Fuel dragsters, there will be Pro Mods battling each other, a jet truck, a pair of jet dragsters, some wheelstander action, and a full slate of sportsman action. This promises to be the show of the season at New England Dragway.

“Last winter we really sat down and looked at the content of our big locally produced shows here at New England Dragway,” Lombardo said. “What we came out of that process with was a totally new approach to bringing our fans the best drag racing action in the country here in Epping. This show is literally going to knock people’s socks off.”

COASTAL TRUCK AND AUTO BODY NIGHT OF THRILLS

EPPING, NH – Nothing gets the adrenaline pumping like nitro and New England Dragway gives race fans a full dose during the Coastal Truck and Auto Body Night of Thrills presented by the New England Dodge Dealers on Saturday, July 11. Some of the biggest names in the nitro business will unleash their fury in one of the season’s most anticipated shows. Headlining this year’s event is Lisa Coil piloting the “Drastic Plastic” fuel altered. Name sound familiar? It should. Lisa is the wife of legendary John Force crew chief Austin Coil. With the best players in the world of nitro to rely on there’s no doubt Lisa can get the job done. She’ll take on the legendary “Wonderwagon” formerly campaigned by top fuel and funny car ace Don Shumacher and currently driven by Joe Haas.

Top Fuel action returns in July when Bobby Lagana, Jr., rolls the family fueler into Epping and faces Todd Paton. Lagana calls New England Dragway one of his favorite tracks. The last time this second generation fuel pilot came to Epping he thundered down the quarter mile to eclipse the 300-mph mark with a blistering four-second charge. This year Lagana is out to reset the New England’s Top Fuel track record that currently stands at 4.580 seconds. Can he do it?

After a multi-year hiatus Nitro Harley’s are coming back to New England Dragway. Four of the nation’s best riders will aim their nitro-fueled beasts toward the top end and hold on for the ride.

The slate of competitors reads like a “who’s who” of Top Fuel Harley warriors. Ray Price will bring in ace rider Joe Sternotti and do battle with D. J. Johnson’s machine piloted by Tak Shigematsu from Japan, Dean Comunal and Bob Mallory.

Capping off a night to remember is K. C. Jones and the unbelievable battle of the Jet Trains along with the “King of Thunder”, Les Shockley in his triple-jet powered Peterbilt truck. Plus there’s a full slate of Pro Comp, Top Sportsman, Top Dragster and Pro Modified on tap. Gates open at 4 PM. Nitro ignites at 6 PM.

There’s plenty of free parking and every ticket includes a free pit pass. Get the best seats by ordering your tickets online at www.newenglanddragway.com. Visit your participating local Pepsi retailer for a special discount coupon. Don’t miss the Coastal Truck and Auto Body Night of Thrills presented by the New England Dodge Dealers Saturday night, July 11, at New Hampshire’s Playground of Power – New England Dragway.
