Groups eye land along Lamprey

August 26, 2008

Local conservationists are eyeing 12 acres of private land across from Mary Blair Park for a possible picnic area or other conservation uses.

The conservation commission and the Lamprey River Advisory Committee have expressed interest in purchasing the land, which sits along the scenic Lamprey River.

Conservation Commission Chairman Greg Tillman said last night the two groups would offer approximately $100,000 to buy the land, which has been on the market for some time.

If the sale moved forward, the conservation commission would fund half of the project using money from a conservation fund. The fund has a little more than $100,000 in it, Tillman said. The rest of the cost would be covered by the Lamprey River Advisory Committee.

The land along Folsom Mill Road could be used for picnics and also provide access to the river for fishing and other activities.

Young players will lead Epping volleyball team

August 26, 2008

Becky Weaver and Shannon Nollet were two excited 15-year-old sophomores Friday afternoon.

That’s because the two were named to co-captain the Epping High School girls volleyball team by their coach, Dan Brodeur.

Yes, those Blue Devils are young … yes, there are only eight players on the team … yes, they’re not a tall team.

“We’re very young,” says Brodeur, “but not really inexperienced. We have several who play club volleyball.”

Six of the team’s eight players are sophomores. A junior and freshmen make up the rest of the team.

There’s another big reason why Brodeur is excited about the upcoming season.

He says he likes to use the term “gym rats” in describing his team.

“I can’t get these girls out of the gym,” says Brodeur. “I love that. They truly love the game. They love learning it and they have a lot of fun with it.”

Epping Auto and Salvage honored for environmental safety

August 22, 2008

Epping Auto and Salvage was honored recently for its commitment to environmental safety.

Epping Auto was designated a “Certified Green Yard,” by the state Department of Environmental Services. This honor is doled out to automobile businesses that go above and beyond the state requirements for environmental safety.

“This was a great, business-friendly environmental program,” said Kelly Graham, office manager for Epping Auto and Salvage. “The DES did a great job of working with businesses without making it an enforcement action. We are really glad to be a part of the program.”

She said that recycling has come a long way, to the point where businesses are receiving $1 each for mercury switches they recycle. She added that programs like the Green Yard Program are helping to make even further improvements.

Larry Averill To Be New Epping A.D.

August 19, 2008

Larry Averill’s decision took a couple months, but a question posed by his good friend answered it for him while on a car ride back to his home in Newfields.

“I’m stepping back into the fray,” said Averill, referring to becoming the new athletic director at Epping High School

Averill, the longtime girls basketball coach from Exeter High School and St. Thomas Aquinas — and coach of the Exeter Hawks, an AAU team, for the past eight years — takes over the position vacated by Casey Todd. Todd made a career change when she took the AD position at Fall Mountain Regional High School.

Averill returns to the athletic director position he held temporarily seven years ago at Epping High.

Behind in Their School Projects

August 12, 2008

Workers at Skyline Roofing Inc. have started each day this summer by looking at the sky and checking the Doppler radar for dark green blobs.

With New Hampshire stuck in a stubborn pattern of storm after storm, workers are finding only small windows to get their work done on school roofing projects that need to be finished before the school bell rings in a couple of weeks.

“Unfortunately the weather is our main enemy and that’s what we’ve got to deal with. You’ve got to plan your day accordingly,” said Steve Lesniak, president and owner of Manchester-based Skyline Roofing.

While dodging raindrops, workers at Skyline Roofing are trying to finish partial roof replacements at Epping High School, Gilford High School, and Spaulding High School in Rochester.

“Gatchell Excavation” Water Tower?

August 11, 2008

First he painted his apartment building bright orange with purple polka dots in a feud with a neighbor years ago.

Now Paul Gatchell has another paint job in mind, only this time it doesn’t involve polka dots.

The 37-year-old Gatchell wants to paint his business logo on the side of the town’s water tower off Route 27.

He got mixed reaction when he floated his idea before water and sewer commissioners this week. Some actually thought he was joking, but Gatchell said yesterday that’s he’s totally serious.

Epping: The Center of the Universe

August 4, 2008

Ever wonder where that phrase originated?

Jason Schreiber in the Union Leader explores the roots of the saying, which has enjoyed a rivival in recent months.

The town clerk’s office has always been the place to go for car registrations, but in Epping you can get your official “Epping is the center of the universe” bumper sticker there as well.

A sign next to the clerk’s window advertises the dark blue bumper stickers with white lettering at a bargain price of just $1.

The stickers have been a hot item since the clerk’s office started selling them a few years ago. In fact, the sample sticker attached to the sign at the clerk’s window has been swiped several times and has had to be replaced. As many as 134 stickers were sold last year. Sales this year have averaged about 10 a month, according to Deputy Town Clerk Joyce Blanchard, who bought bumper stickers for her sons, even though they refused to put them on their cars.
