Retail Site Has New Owner - Grocery In Plans?

November 29, 2007

The proposed retail site behind Burger King on Route 125 has a new owner. Waterstone Retail Development has purchased the site with plans to develop a 285,000 square foot retail center.

According to their website, Waterstone focuses on “grocery-anchored power and non-traditional specialty centers” in their projects, perhaps giving us a clue about their intentions. While the Super Wal*Mart is a Grocery store, many Epping residents still travel to Stratham, Raymond or Lee to do their grocery shopping.

Construction is planned to begin in the spring, and will include significant redesigning of Route 125 and the exits of Route 101.

Raymond Willing To Share Ladder Truck?

November 29, 2007

According to a report in the Union Leader, The Epping Fire Department is close to working out an arrangement with the Raymond Fire Department to share a ladder truck. Epping doesn’t currently have one, and Raymond apparently is having trouble keeping up with the costs of maintaining theirs.

This appears to be a win-win for both towns. In the case of a fire, Epping crews would arrive on the scene first, and if there was a need for the ladder truck, Raymond would be contacted to send it over.

“Obnoxiously Loud” Gunfire Irks Residents

November 26, 2007

The SigSauer Academy, located off of Rte 27 in Epping, has been drawing the ire of some nearby residents who are complaining about the noise and frequency of the gunfire at the site, which is a training site for users ranging from “law enforcement officers and military personnel to security workers and private citizens.”

The Academy recently received approval from the town Planning Board to increase their hours of operation, with the contingency that they add more sound barriers to prevent the increased noise that will accompany the expanded operating hours.

New Era in Girls Basketball

November 23, 2007

New. New gym, new coach, new girls. Everything seems new for the Epping High School girls basketball team.

Seniors Sarah Bolton, Casey Thorp and Moriah Mahala have seen some playing time over the past three years, but as new coach Tim Hopley notes in stealing a quote from former Boston Celtics coach Rick Pitino: “(Erin) Mullenix, (Katie) Bolton and (Meghan) O’Regan aren’t walking back through that door soon. Now it’s (Thorp’s, Mahala’s and Sarah Bolton’s) team.

Wrapping Up the LaBarre Hearing

November 21, 2007

In the second day of a hearing on whether to suppress much of the evidence against accused killer Sheila LaBarre, a former friend nervously testified she was afraid of LaBarre and police officers described bizarre behavior, including an incident in which she flashed investigators.

LaBarre, 49, is accused of murdering 24-year-old Kenneth Countie in March 2006, and then burning his body on the front lawn of her remote Epping farmhouse.

LaBarre Hearing, Day Two

November 20, 2007

Today is the second day of testimony to determine if evidence and statements collected by the Epping police at the start of the investigation of Sheila LaBarre will be allow in court when the trial begins in March.

Road Agent David Reinhold testified today that Red Oak Hill Lane is a town maintained road, meaning that the officers were within the law to go past a gate erected by LaBarre on the dirt road.

Lara Bricker has more on today’s session on Seacoast Online.

Can we also cease with the references to this being the “Horse Farm Murder?” The LaBarre estate is not a horse farm. There may have been horses there, but their presence does not a “farm” make.

Here are the stories wrapping up yesterday’s session, which appeared in this morning’s papers:
